Interesting facts about watches

A watch as a gift: how to choose when you don’t know their taste

by Ure po meri on Sep 09, 2026

The short answer: if you know what they wear, pick the size from their wrist and the colour from their jewellery. If you don't know, buy a gift card — a watch is too personal a thing to guess at.

A watch is one of the few gifts a person wears every day and shows to everyone they shake hands with. Which is also why a wrong one is so visible. Here is what actually decides it.

1. Size matters more than the model

A watch two millimetres too large looks borrowed. If you can get at a watch they already own, measure the case diameter — edge to edge, excluding the crown. That is the most reliable information you can get.

If you can't, judge from the wrist: slimmer wrists 36–38 mm, medium 38–40 mm, larger 40–41 mm. The wrist size guide goes into this properly.

2. Case colour follows the jewellery they already wear

Someone who wears silver jewellery will almost certainly wear steel; someone who wears gold will reach for a gold or two-tone case. It is a simple rule, and in practice it holds far more often than guessing at a dial colour does.

3. The movement says what kind of person they are

For someone who wants a watch to simply work, an automatic with a date is right. For someone who takes things apart to see how they work, a skeleton or an open heart. For someone who times things — a chronograph. If that decision is the hard part, read the movement comparison.

4. The strap is the least risky part

A strap swaps in five minutes and costs little, so don't let it stall you. A metal bracelet is the safer choice for a gift than leather, because it doesn't depend on what kind of leather someone likes.

5. If you are not sure, don't guess

A watch is personal. If you don't know enough about their taste, a gift card is a better gift than the wrong watch — the recipient builds their own in the configurator or picks from the collection. The card arrives by email right after purchase and does not expire.

The practical things people forget

  • Delivery time. A hand-assembled watch is not an off-the-shelf item — plan a few days ahead of the date you need it.
  • Returns. If the size is wrong, the watch can go back within 30 days; return postage is free within Slovenia.
  • Packaging. Every watch arrives in a gift box, so there is nothing to wrap.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure their wrist without giving away the surprise?

Measure the case diameter of a watch they already wear, or the length of an existing bracelet. If neither is possible, buy a gift card — that removes the problem entirely.

What if they don't like it?

It can be returned within 30 days of delivery and we refund the full amount. Return postage is free within Slovenia.

Can I have the watch engraved?

We don't offer engraving at the moment. You can, however, build the watch entirely to order — dial, case, hands and strap are all your choice, which is a fairly personal gift in itself.

How late can I order and still have it in time?

Because each watch is assembled individually, order a few days ahead rather than on the last day. If you're short on time, a gift card is always instant — it arrives by email within minutes.
